MINSTRY ISSUES STATEMENT : PERTAINING TO NATIONAL RESERVE AREAS IN NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN BAHRI

Asmara, 1 October 2010 - The Ministry of Land, Water and Environment has issued a statement on the urgent implementation of 6 fundamental directives pertaining to national reserve areas in the Northern and Southern Bahri.
The statement issued yesterday focuses on safety and protection of national reserve areas in both regions through reinitiating guarding activities and strengthening popular participation, and thereby preventing environmental degradation.
It further pointed out that the utilization of natural resources in a manner that fails to take into consideration the safety and protection of the environment is not allowed.
In this respect, the statement indicated that any economic activities or development projects in such sites would only be undertaken through the consultation and permit of the concerned administrative bodies.
It went on to say that law enforcers and advocators of natural environment who are entrusted with the task of putting into effect these directives are duty-bound to take the necessary legal punishment against those individuals violating the law.
Northern and Southern Bahri denotes to geographical escarpments stretching from Central Kebesa to east of the Semhar plains in the Northern Red Sea region.
