take this opportunity to give a heartfelt thanks to New Zealnd's
Ethiopian Community who have come forward with great support and love
in this difficult time for us, thank you.

Colonel Woldemichael Mebrahtu was a dedicated husband, a father, an
officer and a true gentleman. He was 69 years old when he passed away
on November 1st, 2010.
Colonel Woldemichael Mebrahtu Negash was born to his parents Ato
Mebrahtu Negash and Weyzero Zewdi Haile in 1941 in Asmara. He moved to
Ethiopia at a young age and he completed his high school study at
Shimeles Habte Secondary School in Addis Ababa. Young Woldemichael who
had developed an interest in law enforcement joined a police college
and graduated as a commissioned officer.
He went on to serve the Ethiopian Police Force in different capacities
rising to the rank of Colonel. During his service in the Police Force
Colonel Woldemichael earned the love and respect of the public he
served and the colleges he worked with. But most of all he was dearly
loved by his family, close friends, and neighbors whom he treated like
family.
In the early nineties the Colonel and his family left Addis Ababa and
moved to Sudan eventually finding their way to New Zealand and making
it their home since 1998.
Colonel Woldemichael was a man with a giant heart who touched many who
he came in contacts with. In his community in Auckland he was known
for his kindness, with kids he acted as a kid making them laugh, and
with adults he was the wise and kind elderly who often visited those
afflicted with illness, advised those in difficulty, and played a
peace maker’s role in homes with marital problems. He also served for
many years as a community leader for the Eritrean Community of New
Zealand Inc. His loss is deeply felt by the Eritrean community in New
Zealand.
Colonel Woldemichael was hospitalized and undergoing treatment for a
heart related problem when he passed away on November 1st, 2010.
Colonel Woldemichael will be laid to rest this coming Thursday in Eritrea.
Colonel Woldemichael is survived by his wife Wezero Sara DeGrande and
eight kids.
The family appreciates all the support and love it received from the
Eritrean community in New Zealand and all friends and family from near
and far.
May the Lord our God Almighty accept him in heaven.
