An apparent murder-suicide in Las Vegas; Suspect identified as Michael
Gebreneguse
The Clark County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified a man suspected of
stabbing his girlfriend before killing himself as 31-year-old Michael
Gebreneguse, Fox News in Las Vegas said. The man, whose nationality is not
identified, is believed to be from Eritrea or Ethiopia.
Gebreneguse died after police said he stepped in front of a tractor-trailer on
U.S. 95 near College Drive early Tuesday morning.
His girlfriend, Fethawit Okbai, 19, of Las Vegas, was found a short time earlier
stabbed to death at the couple’s home on Tropicana Avenue near Lindell Road. Her
cause of death was multiple stab wounds, the Clark County Coroner's Office said.
Police said the couple had lived at the home for the past year and a half.

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - Answers are slim in a senseless slaying at an apartment
complex near Tropicana and Lindell. What started as a death investigation is now
being called an apparent murder suicide.
It started around 1 a.m. on Tuesday when a woman was discovered by a roommate,
stabbed to death. Hours after the body was discovered, police say her killer
took his own life by leaping into highway traffic.
Police say the man was hit by a semi at U.S. 95 and College Drive in Henderson.
He was rushed to Sunrise Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
According to authorities, he escaped from the apartment complex in his work
vehicle, a taxi cab. The taxi driver by profession parked it along the side of
the highway before he's believed to have made the deadly decision.
The killer and victim were boyfriend and girlfriend and had apparently been
living together for more than a year.
Neighbors who viewed the couple as "happy together" are aghast by the grim
details.
"Never seen any problems or you know, nothing to really think that something
like this would happen to them," said neighbor Adrian Carbonell.
Residents at the complex where the murder occurred say they didn't hear or see
anything unusual until the arrival of homicide detectives. Police say it was the
victim's roommate who dialed 911.
"I've killed wildlife and cleaned them and fish. Sticking a knife in something
like that is gruesome. You have to have no conscience to do something like
that," said neighbor Steve Swartz.
The man involved has been identified as Michael Gebreneguse, 31, of Las Vegas.
The cause of death has been ruled a suicide due to multiple blunt force trauma
from being hit by an autmobile.
The woman's identity has not yet been released.
