At the last African Championship and the Tour of Rwanda, the hegemony of
South Africa and Morocco on the African cycling was strongly contested by
Eritrea. This nation emerging from the little queen of the continent has
surprised many as it was unchallenged during those two competitions.

Indeed it is during the African Nations Championship raced in Rwanda in
early November that the Eritrean Cycling emerged from anonymity to become
airborne. So after the race, Eritrea has achieved the grand slam by assuming
the top spot in team and individual overall.

Better still, the individual standings showed the presence of 4 Eritrean
athletes in the top 10 with the yellow jersey holder Daniel Teklehaimanot.
Rebelote for this 22 year old young Eritrean at the tour of Rwanda held last
November from 16 to 25. Overall, Teklehaimanot has once again imposed
himself with a time of 29h 02min 32s and has assumed the leader's yellow
jersey. In addition the second place went to his compatriot Berhane
Teweldemedhin Natnael with 56s late. Whereas the South African Reinardt
Janse van Rensburg and the Moroccan Adil Jelloul contented themselves
respectively with the 3rd and 4th places.

Also, the team rankings for the month of November of the Union Cycliste
International (Africa region) crowns unsurprisingly Eritrea (437.68 points)
Best African nation of cycling ahead of Morocco (419 pts) and Cameroon (129
pts). At the individual level, it is the Eritrean Daniel Teklehaymanot
(199.67 pts) who is crowned king before Moroccan Adil Djelloul (113 pts) and
fellow Meran Russan (86.67 pts). Suffice to say that a new era of cycling is
being written in Africa with Eritrea.
