Pupils send 1,300 books to help youngsters in Eritrea
More than 1,300 books are on their way to a school library in Eritrea thanks
to children's generosity.
The efforts of Hinckley's Battling Brook Primary School were inspired by a
visit from the British ambassador to Eritrea, Sandra Tyler-Hayward.
Ms Tyler-Haywood comes from Nuneaton and her daughter, Rachel Tyler-Murrell,
has two children at Battling Brook, Joshua and Ryan.
Mrs Tyler-Murrell said when her mother first had the idea to stock a small
library she persuaded her to visit the school to explain it and create a
link with the Eritrean children. "We were hoping to get 450 books but we
have got more than 1,300 ready to go," she said.
"All the children have brought at least one to help and others have brought
50 or 100 from their homes.
"English is the second language now in Eritrea and we want to be able to
help with their education and set up a link so we can have pen-pals and
learn a little bit more about Africa."
The books are being delivered free by the courier company DHL.
