YPFDJ-NY kicked off the 20th Independence Day celebration in New York by
performing a skit of a tug-of-war between Eritrea and her enemy. The skit,
which depicted The Struggle for Independence, fittingly ended with Eritrea
emerging victorious and was followed by the national anthem led by the
group.

The sacred Eritrean anthem became the prelude to an unforgettable night
steered by a brilliant performance by keyboardist Abraham and singer Lu’ul
Fessehaye, whom is a long time favorite in New York. The energetic performer
rocked the crowd with joyful music that coincided with the mood in the
building. YPFDJ-NY was quick to capture the festivities by setting up a
photo booth to print and sell pictures on the spot. The celebration, which
entailed dancing and laughter, went on through the night and only took a
break for the cake cutting ceremony, two short speeches and a poem by
Eritrean youth.

It was a very encouraging sight to see the younger generations of Eritreans
in a festive mood displaying their identity and culture. Well aware of the
hardships endured to attain a free Eritrea, consciousness, which has always
been an Eritrean psyche, is being passed down onto the youth. A good example
of this is when a young Eritrean by the name of Musie Ghebredhin gave a
brief speech on the significance of the hard fought war of independence. The
president-in-the-making Dawit, famous for his speech during the Washington
DC protest rally, also had words on the occasion of Eritrean independence.
Not to be outdone, YPFDJ-NY’s own Millen Asfaha recited a poem that marked
the occasion of “20 Years of Pride.”

With the tandem of our forefathers as the backbone and the youth at the
forefront, in its 20 years of Independence, Eritrea has embarked on a path
said to have been mission impossible by some powerful quarters. Despite the
wishes of those whom are not willing to see an independently run African
government that is truly accountable to its people – in the past, present
and future generations – Eritrea is still standing strong and, guided by
EPLF’s vision, is marching forward towards the bright future that lies
ahead.
