Eritrean expats in UAE celebrate Independence Day

June 6--DUBAI -- Eritreans residing in the UAE celebrated the 20th Independence Day of their country in Dubai.
The celebration was attended by Eritrean Ambassador Osman Mohammed Omer, Eritrean Consul-General Yohannes Teccemmichael, officials from consulates of different countries in Dubai, prominent personalities of the UAE and a large number of invited guests of different nationalities as well as members of the Eritrean community in the UAE.
The function started with the national anthems of Eritrea and the UAE. The Consul-General explained the historic significance of Eritrea's Independence Day. After a feast of Eritrean food, community members and Consul-General cut the 20th anniversary cake.
A cultural performance, showcasing the culture and colourful heritage of Eritrea by a musical band specially flown in from Eritrea, contributed to the success of evening which also featured poetry reading and singing of national songs.
"This is the day Eritrean freedom-fighters relished the taste of independence after 30 years of war and devastation," Yohannes said, addressing the gathering.
He commended the Eritrean people's unparalleled determination to get a sovereign Eritrea and thanked all those who had sacrificed to make the dream come true.
Yohannes reviewed the landmarks in Eritrea's development and the efforts made by the government to ensure food security, preserve agriculture and fishery resources, infrastructural and transport development, education and health services.
Speaking to Khaleej times, Yohannes said that during the past 20 years, the Eritreans have enjoyed the dignity and freedom.
"This celebration is aimed at renewing our pledge to contribute to building greatest nation and prosperous state," he added.
