Dear Eritrean compatriots,
Once again, it is time to reflect on the meaning of our struggle for
independence and the sacrifices we all paid to achieve and to keep it.
We can talk about the 65,000 and the 19,000 young men and women who paid
the ultimate so you and I can be free. We could also rightfully remember
the more than 1,000, 000 Eritreans from all walks of life who have been
displaced from the country they love and people they cherish most all
because of injustices that fell on them from an expansionist neighbor
supported by certain irresponsible major powers. But, those are not mere
numbers. They are our fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, sons,
daughters, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Yes, we had to pay that much sacrifice to be and remain free. That was
also some fit that we, Eritreans, should be proud about. But, the
greatest pride still remains on how we deal with the families of our
fallen heroes. Many of us are already doing what little we can by
supporting many members of the families of Eritrean Martyrs, which is a
commendable deed. We must continue doing that as long as there are
families of our fallen heroes who need such assistance. It is a small
price to pay for an independence that we are all enjoying.
