Nakfa (Tigrinya: ናቕፋ) is a town in northern Eritrea, after which the nakfa currency is named. It served as the base for the Eritrean People's Liberation Front, during the Eritrean War of Independence.
During the war, Nakfa was subjected to a number of destructive attacks that left only the mosque standing.
Close to Nacfa are the trenches of Denden. Here you can find the sites of the liberation struggle. In response to the devastating blanket bombing inflicted by the Ethiopian MIG's, whole villages, based in a securely defended rear area around Nacfa, carefully camouflaged, were constructed underground, with schools, hospitals, factories, printing presses, mills, pharmacies, workshops and entertainment centers. The remains of these 'towns' can be seen today in the village of Nacfa. The climb to the peak of Denden is well worth the effort just for the view.
