Weldemariam and Confortolla the winners in Mayrhofen – WMRA Grand Prix
Mayrhofen, Austria - After nearly two weeks of rain in the eastern part of
the Alps, on the Third Harakiri Mountain Run weekend the sun was the first
winner! As in the first two years a perfect summer picnic feeling descended
upon Mayrhofen as runners from more than 20 nations competed in the run up
Mount Penken on Sunday (31).
*Weldemariam beats Arslan – Men’s race*
After a fierce contest, It took Eritrea’s Azarya Weldemariam, the silver
medallist from the last World Mountain Running Championships, exactly 50
minutes to finishe the ascent and claim the victory, 23 seconds ahead of
recently crowned 5-time European Mountain Running Champion Ahmet Arslan from
Turkey.
The pair were followed by the two Kenyan runners, Geoffey Gikuni Ndungu
(51:20) and Issac Kosgei (51:45 min), and „the legendary“ Jonathan Wyatt
from New Zealand (52:25).
The best Austrian runner in Mayrhofen was once again Simon Lechleitner who
finished ninth in 54:31, nearly one minute in front of the current Austrian
champion Alexander Rieder who finished 10th in 55:22.
*Confortolla beats Krkoc! – women’s race*
The women’s race witnessed the revenge of the European Championships, and
again Antonella Confortola (1:02:50) finished ahead of Slovenia’s Lucija
Krkoc (1:03:32) and German master’s runner Lisa Reisinger (1:03:58).
Last year’s winner, Brandy Erholtz of the U.S., finished fourth in 1:05:02,
followed by the leading Austrian, Susanne Mair, who clocked 1:05:34.
The WMRA Grand Prix continues with the fifth Stopp in Tirana, Albania, on 11
September, as part of the 27th World Mountain Running Championships.
