5 Aug 2011, Toronto, Canada-- Eritreans living in Toronto and surrounding
areas have reported the successful conclusion of the Eritrean Festival 2011
held in Toronto, Ontario from Jul 30 to Aug 1st and attended by an
unprecedented number of participants from the province as well as from other
parts of Canada and the United States. It is estimated that this year's
Festival has attracted more than 5000 people over the course of the
three-day festivities.
The festival commenced with a public seminar on current affairs of the State
of Eritrea conducted by the distinguished guest speaker, Ambassador Girmai
Gebremariam. This highly informative seminar covered most of the topic of
major concern to Diaspora Eritreans. The update from Ambassador Girmai was
well received by attendees who, responding to the latest accusations to the
people and government of Eritrea, reaffirmed their participation to the
national rebuff effort.
Concurrently, a major soccer tournament hosting a number of teams
representing various Eritrean Communities of eastern Canada also took place
during the festival. It needs to be reported that this year's prized
Festival trophy, for men’s adult soccer category, was deservedly won by team
Anabs from Ottawa. Likewise, different sports tournament for various
category were also taking place during festival.
Festival's daytime program was complemented, at night, by live concert held
on Saturday and Sunday night. The concert featured renowned Eritrean artists
Tesfalem Arafaine (Korchach), Habtesellassie Abrha (Aynome),,Melekin
Atombosa accompanied by *Selam band*, who cheered revellers all night long
by playing a vivid array of music from Eritrea.
It must be reported that Sunday's concert was a sold out show resulting with
many revellers being turned away.
