Eminent Africans denounce war on Libya By: STAFF REPORTER
MORE than 140 eminent Africans leaders will sign an open letter in Rosebank,
Johannesburg today to express their concerns over the all-out war raging in
Libya in a bid to oust Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.
Amongst the issues raised in the open letter are the “misuse” of the United
Nations Security Council (UNSC) to engage in “militarised diplomacy” and
“abuse” of the UNSC Resolutions 1970 and 1973 to effect regime change in
Libya.
Also on the agenda is the UNSC’s rejection of political solutions in Libya,
which has long been advocated by the African Union (AU), which which the
group says were largely sidelined in the peace-seeking process.
They said the African voice has been marginalised while there is growing
civil war and loss of life on the African continent, and maintained that the
Libyans should be allowed to decide their own fate and rulers without
outside interference.
They also cautioned against the “threat of re-colonising Africa”,
especially the resource-rich countries on the continent.
Signatories supporting the campaign and open letter, among others, include
former South African President Thabo Mbeki, former Minister of Intelligence
Ronnie Kasrils, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Aziz Pahad, and
ANC National Executive Committee member Jesse Duarte.
The signatories also include a number of distinguished African academics
from various South African and other continental universities and research
institutions, artists, clergy, and financial institutions.
