Libya: Is the AU in crisis?

Posted Monday, August 29 2011 at 19:52

The League of Nations, the predecessor to the United Nations
organisation, died when the world countries failed to act after Benito
Mussolini’s army invaded Ethiopia in 1935.

The same fate may well befall the African Union which is proving
jdaily just how dysfunctional it is for failing to intervene in the
Libya crisis, and then speaking in discordant voices over whether to
recognise the emerging administration.

Pragmatic reasoning should tell African leaders that no amount of
rhetoric will restore the brother-leader to power after 42 years of
autocracy. Why can’t the AU cut its losses?

Countries like Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia and nine others have
recognised the National Transitional Council as the legitimate
government. But the rest in the AU have refused to do so. To what
purpose?

There are perhaps legitimate reasons why the AU is in such a pique: It
was snubbed by Nato during the civil war, which is why the emissaries
sent there by the AU to talk to Gaddafi – presidents Jacob Zuma,
Yoweri Museveni and others – are not likely to accept Nato’s invasion
as anything but meddling.

But that is no reason for recaciltrance. Like it or not, Libya is
being liberated from Gaddafi. Libya has oil wealth. Africa should be
reaching out to the rebels, not sounding like a child denied a sweet.
