President Isias Afewerki and Eritrea’s leadership: A bright spot in the midst of world problems.

On September 25th, 2011 history was witnessed as thousands of Eritreans from North America made their way to New York City to meet, greet and support a leadership that exemplifies the true meaning of “One heart, One people”. At a time when uprisings are taking place everywhere including in the USA, the Eritrean people once again showed their resilience to stand by the truth for the truth. They put a “STAMP” and an exclamation mark (!) on the many attacks that are propagated against their country, people and government. Eritrea is blessed with leaders; and they are as cherished as they are rare. In order to really look at the facts lets ponder for a minute and ask the question: What has taken place in the modern world that has created the current absence of great leaders? Well let ‘s see, one factor is the dissociation of leadership from genuine authority that is rooted in truth. The world today has begun to shift, to change and transform itself with ever increasing rapidity from one shape into another.

Change is omnipresent and has separated us from anything stable and enduring, including a basis of authority from which a great leader could emerge. To quote a statement from President Isias Afewerki in his UN address, “ Despite his best efforts, the strength of his personality and his many talents, however, that hope has not been realized. The reality is that the problems we face are systemic, were accumulated over many years and decades and requires systemic and structural change”. When referring to the foreign policy failures the quality of leadership and the systematic blunders of domestic policy here in the Unite States. Meanwhile, in Eritrea true leadership is anchored in authority based on experience from many years of self-reliance and a dedicated population that works hard in rhythm with it’s government. It is the difference from most other societies and it is what saves the country’s leadership from demagoguery, and dictatorship. Even though the western media and those who use the term dictator like fashion want to deceive the innocent minds, Eritrea’s leaders are way too far from the very term that is used to describe them in a negative light.

As a matter of fact on September 25th, 2011 like every day since his younger days when the dedicated and hard working visionary leader started to fight for human rights and justice over 45 years ago, nothing has changed in his behavior.

He lives among his people and his people live among him. He only gains from seeing his country and people get better. On that special day in New York he expressed his feeling loudly and emotionally as he said in his own words “You may say that I came to you after ten years, but on my part I have never been away from you even for a single hour”. In Eritrea today the leadership starting from his Excellency President Isias Afewerki is distinguished from the false prophets or the self-serving manipulators of our region and many parts of the world where change is taking place.

In Eritrea the leadership involves association with the people. Consequently, the leaders of Eritrea have a certain amount of such intangible qualities as zeal, fervor, charm and charisma. As indicated on many occasions, when one of the leaders can’t be at a certain place, the other fills in the gap along with the entire communities they serve. In most other parts of the world including some in Eritrea’s neighborhood leaders have no involvement with truth; they have little of substance to offer to those who follow them. They are mostly motivated by greed and a hunger to be in power. As an example let’s take the world of sports, a leader like Zeresenay Tadesse is understood to be a front-runner, one who puts some distance between himself and his competitors. A true leader, the one for whom a culture has such great need, is neither an opportunistic follower or an ambitious front-runner. If there are some who subscribe to this notion learn from the leader of the people. If anyone is truly to lead people to some fulfilling destiny they must lead them without separating themselves from the people. Just like his Excellency President Isias Afewerki you must be uncommon enough to inspire people to struggle to achieve a good end. At the same time, you must be common enough so that the common man can emulate you. On September 25th, 2011 all of the above were proven to be true once again in New York City.

May be the same media who attack Eritrea on just about everything could have been there to cover this unique moment, however in the middle of the world’s biggest media center in Manhattan it was very difficult to swallow the truth because the event was not staged like they wanted it with a handful of rats on the street. It was very true and with so much passion as thousands witnessed the love that Eritreans share with their leaders especially his Excellency Isias Afewerki as being a special one. For every paid agent and anti-Eritrea element there are millions out there who support and love the STORY OF ERITREA, it’s people, it’s leaders, it’s self reliance and its national harmony which has been the strongest defense against the many illegal actions against it. The UN should learn from this and remove all illegal sanctions against ERITREA today!
