Pana 09/12/2011
Brussels, Belgium - Alexander Rondos of Greece was appointed the EU Special
Representative for the Horn of Africa, according to a statement from the EU
Commission, released Thursday in Brussels, the Belgian capital. The
statement said Rondos will be responsible for the following countries --
Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan and Uganda.
The letter of appointment, signed by Catherine Ashton, the High
Representative of the European Union for Common Foreign and Security Policy
(CFSP), said that Mr. Rondos's priority is to address the Somali conflict
and its repercussions in the region, including maritime piracy, the main
cause of instability in Somalia.
The EU recently adopted a strategic plan for the Horn of Africa to restore
peace, security and speed up development in the region.
In another statement, the EU announced that it had released 50 million euros
for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to support peace
operations in that country.
The grant will enable the peacekeeping force, currently operating with 9,800
troops, to increase its number to 12,000.
