Sudan and South Sudan agreed June 5 to unconditionally withdraw their
forces from disputed border regions to create a demilitarized zone
that will stretch 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) north and south of the
border, Sudanese Interior Minister Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid said June 5,
Xinhua reported, citing Khartoum's Al-Sahafa newspaper. Hamid added
that both parties agreed to the zone and its monitoring mechanisms and
that overcoming security barriers would help resolve other issues.
South Sudan's ambassador in Addis Ababa confirmed the agreement.
