Police lay murder charge in summer shooting
Calgary HeraldPublished: Saturday, November 29, 2008
More than three months after Efrem Kuflom was found slumped over the wheel
of a car in the Beltline, police have charged a man with first-degree murder
in connection with the bold daytime shooting.
Police arrested Semere Mehari, 30, in Lethbridge on Wednesday and
transported him to Calgary where he was interviewed by detectives be-fore
being charged.
Homicide Staff Sgt. Kevin Forsen said police believe the shooting may have
been drug-related but haven't identified a conclusive motive.
Mehari was identified soon after the Aug. 18 shooting as a"person of
interest,"Forsen said.
While witnesses and surveillance video helped move the investigation
forward, locating Mehari proved difficult, Forsen said.
Police received information the suspect was in Lethbridge on Wednesday.
Lethbridge police confirmed Mehari's whereabouts and, together with Calgary
investigators, closed in on the suspect.
Mehari was arrested at a friend's trailer in Lethbridge.
Police say the victim and accused knew each other through Calgary's Eritrean
community.
Now that formal charges have been laid, Forsen said investigators will
"start to dig a little deeper into that relationship."
