Somali Islamists attack, destroy residences of MPs in Baidoa
APA- Mogadishu (Somalia) – Somalia's Islamic courts Union (ICU) gunmen have
attacked several residences of the country's parliamentarians in Baidoa, the
seat of Somali parliament, 250kms (150 miles) south west of Mogadishu,
sources said here Tuesday.
Heavy damage was done to the homes Monday evening of the first deputy of
speaker of parliament, Professor Mohaned Omar Dhalha, as well as the homes
of Abdi Aware and Osman ali Ato, sources said.
Heavy gunfire could was heard throughout the city leaving one body guard
dead and several wounded in the homes attacked, sources told APA.
The attacks came a day after hundreds of Ethiopian troops withdrew from a
military base outside the city in accordance with the recently-signed
Djibouti peace agreement.
Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, when the system of
the state totally collapsed.
