Egypt: Egyptian radio hints that USA seeks to "occupy" Somalia
14.12.2008
The commentary said piracy is "a criminal phenomenon that imposed itself on
the international community, as it threatens the international navigational
courses, especially in the Gulf of Aden". "No one in the world can stand
with hands tied in the face of that phenomenon," it added.
The commentary then examined the anti-piracy navy operation launched by
European countries. "In spite of the international efforts to face up to
piracy, several regional countries are concerned that Washington will seize
the opportunity to interfere again in Somalia and occupy it, particularly as
it asked the UN Security Council to allow the anti-piracy squads to make
incursions into Somali territories to pursue pirates there," it said.
"The recent international anti-piracy steps should be confined to pursuit of
pirates within international waters in the Gulf of Aden, Red Sea and Somali
coasts," the commentary urged. "In other words, Washington should be
forestalled from getting into Somalia once again," it said.
"In our point of view, the first step that should be taken to combat piracy
lies in finding an immediate solution to the Somali crisis and helping
Somalia get out of its current anarchy," the commentary concluded.
