Malta and Eritrea established Diplomatic Relations during a ceremony held at
the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations in New York.
The Protocol establishing these diplomatic relations was signed by Saviour
F. Borg, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent
Representative of Malta to the United Nations, and by Araya Desta,
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of
Eritrea to the United Nations.
The two Ambassadors also signed a joint letter addressed to the United
Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, informing of the establishment of
the diplomatic relations, thereby depositing The Protocol with him.
The two Ambassadors took the opportunity of the event to exchange views
about the situation in the Horn of Africa and the Mediterranean. As maritime
States, Ambassador Borg and Ambassador Desta highlighted the importance
which their respective governments gave to the sea in contributing towards
the strengthening of their countries' economies, as well as in their
