With the Fall season gone and winter season here the Athletics scene
for EAAA has been nothing but spectacular. EAAA is proud to announce that
once again Simon Bairu has qualified for the IAAF world championships to be
held in Poland in March of 2010. Simon qualified after winning his 7th
Canadian national cross country title with a time of 28:49. If most of you
recall Simon was also a winner of the Canadian 10 K in October one month
earlier. Simon is also working hard to help up and coming runners & EAAA
members by consulting with them on how they can improve with their running
styles. Congratulations to Simon Bairu on his success and EAAA wishes him
good luck at the World championships where he may be competing along side of
runners from Eritrea.
In Charlotte , North Carolina, Meron Fessehaye who runs for the varsity
cross country squad at Charlotte Latin wins her 3rd NCISAA state
championships by being part of the top 10 and helping her team to a title.
Meron who is the only Eritrean-American at her school has informed us that
she has a secret to share. She says that her offer of a "Pre-Race Snack" has
added much needed energy to her team. The Snack a popular bread in Eritrean
house holds "Hambasha" is known as the "Magic Eritrean bread" by her team
mates. EAAA would like to congratulate Meron on an outstanding season as she
is currently on the top 25 list of the record fast times for girl's cross
country at her school since it's founding in 1970 with a time of 23:19.
There is no doubt that Meron can play a big role in helping to enhance
women's running for EAAA.
>From the Raleigh area in Cary, North Carolina Shewit Woldensae has gotten
second place at the East Carolina University invitational and repeated in
second place again at the University of North Carolina Wilmington
invitational. She has had a great season and is posed to be one of the top
runners on her team. By being a part of her school team, the Green Hope high
school Cross Country team she competed in the JV division and took 1st place
at the conference meet with a spectacular time of 20:56. Her school also won
their conference, regional and State titles. Her 4 by 2K relay team also got
first place at another meet held in North Carolina. EAAA is proud of her
accomplishments and we wish Shewit a great year as she is training hard to
get ready for spring season. Congratulations on an outstanding job and your
exemplary role for women runners will help produce much needed Eritrean
women athletes.
In Boys running we will track down more information from our up and coming
runner Petros Wolday from the metro DC area and make it available very soon.
Meanwhile EAAA would like to congratulate all Eritrean Runners for a very
awesome 2009 season where many victorious moments have added joy to
Eritreans. It is also to be noted that Zeresenay Tadesse last week
contributed money and moral support to Eritrean martyrs fund. He expressed
that it gives him deep satisfaction to extend assistance to the families of
fallen heroes.
Good luck to all Eritrean Athletics in the year 2010.
