I WISH I COULD FLY

I wish I could fly,
Fly high like a bird,
Over the Atlantic,
Across the continent Africa,
To my beloved Eritrea.

I wish I could fly,
Day and night,
Over the trenches of Badma,
Across the fields of Tsorona,
Over the rivers of Alitena,
Hover above the rooftops of Zalambesa,
Fly through the Afar plain,
To the frontiers of Bure.

I wish I could fly in earnest,
Not to marvel at the landscape,
Marked with solders long dead,
Victims of reckless human wave,
Young lives untimely expired,
In a forbidding carnage.

I wish I could fly,
Not over sites of biblical tragedy,
Grazing lands turn cemetery.
They fell dead before they reach far,
Their last glimpse was hell amidst screams and cry.
In all this chaos lost is the fact ,
That an Ethiopian mother mourns,
For her son is alive no more,
Mislead by men with wounded souls.

I wish I could fly,
If only to see the brightest stars,
The protectors of my motherland.
My heroes ever kind but confident,
They posses not, hearts of defeat,
Yet reluctant to kill another man,
But so willing to stand and fight,
For the love of country and people,
United with one heart and mind.

I wish I could fly,
If only to shield my heroes,
>From the malice lurking around,
>From the hateful evil eyes,
Staring from across the line.

I wish I could fly,
If only to shower my heroes with love,
And if I can only bring this nightmare to pass.
Oh, how I worry and despair,
Will they or will they not come out alive,
The reckoning puts a stake through my heart,
But dying for country, peace, justice, and honor,
Knows no bound,
In this land of perpetual valor.
Such is the calling anyway,
When you are born,
In a country worth the price to pay.

I wish I could fly,
If only to declare,
Do away with the foxhole,
Peace is finally home.
