OAU: Weigh your Conscience
Dr. Amdetsion Kidane
July 13, 1999
OAU
It is time to evaluate you
To measure you;
To weigh you on a scale of justice
For the thirty-six years of service
You rendered during your existence.
We have waited for so long
With millions of African throng
To hail you with exalting song
For whatever service but wrong;
The plan to eradicate poverty
For whatever service but wrong;
The plan to eradicate poverty
To work for peace and prosperity
As envisioned with certainty.
Yes, oh OAU
As Africans with flicker of hope in you
We have to pose queries of concern,
To measure your success and let you earn
The respect that you deserve if you do
As you owe us justice long overdue
On the annual meetings you conducted
The resolutions you passed
The actions you took
To take members off the hook
If you sincerely attempted,
Were you, in all respects, firm or weak?
Did you take the actions that you did legally
Within the framework of the charter?
Did you execute them fairly
To avoid any complaint later?
Can you live with your decision morally
When you see lives die in wars and hunger?
On this we challenge you
Out of formality we say, dear OAU;
But with words blunt and uncouth
We will tell you nothing but the truth;
You are unassertive and timid
Your judgement unfair and unjust indeed,
Causing many African lives to perish
While letting your vested interest flourish.
Thus, on the scale of justice unwavering
You are weighed and found lacking
With no divine right to predict your fall
We wish and pray that you overhaul.
Sincerely
Amdetsion Kidane
