1. The Eritrean-Yemeni People's Bilateral Friendship Committee, in itscommuniqué of 28 August,. condemned the Ethiopian government's violationof international laws and agreements by taking inhuman actions againstEritreans residing in Ethiopia. Although the committee has been neutraldue to its geographic, historical and social ties with both the Eritreanand Ethiopian peoples, it considered seriously the unwarranted detentionand deportation of Eritreans from Ethiopia. Furthermore, the committeestated its opposition against any foreign intervention which may agitatethe conflict and called upon other nations to put their efforts into resolving the conflict through diplomatic talks and summoning the Ethiopian regime to stop the violation of Eritreans' rights in Ethiopia.
2. The war drums continue to beat on the Ethiopian part despite proposals from Eritrea and the international community as a whole for peace talks to end the present conflict. Dr. Abdelmejid Hussein, a former Minister of Communications in the Ethiopian government, boasted that Ethiopia had completed its preparations for war a month ago. The former cabinet minister left theEthiopian government to take a post with the United Nations. In a speechhe gave to a "Save Ethiopia" fund raising gathering in Washington DC on22 August, 1998, he said, "For those of you away from the realities inEthiopia, we have completed our preparations in the military and logistics and there is no need for doubts. Whatever the US says or whatIsrael has communicated about the eleven war planes that are to be givenafter peace prevails, we have more warplanes than the ones aforementioned."
