ERINA Update

1. US envoy Anthony Lake met yesterday morning with President Isaias
Afwerki. Mr. Lake shared with the Eritrean president his initial ideas
on a peaceful solution to the conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia. He
also stated that he has no intention of issuing public pronouncements on
the US initiative as he was convinced that this would not be helpful.
President Isaias assured him that Eritrea shared his views on the merits
of a quiet approach.
Mr. Lake is heading a five person team of officials from the State
Department, the Pentagon and the National Security Council. Mr. Lake
departed from Asmara this morning for Addis Ababa.
2. The President of the University of Asmara, Dr. Woldeab Ishak, has
made a speech underlining the role of higher education in the
development of a country. Dr. Woldeab made the speech on the opening day
of the World Higher Education Summit taking place in Paris from October
5 to October 9. The head of the University called the attention of the
summit to the plight of Eritrean university students still being
detained in Addis Ababa by the Ethiopian government.
