ERINA Update
Tuesday, October 13, 1998
1. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Haile Woldensae, has said that
the peaceful solution of the Eritrean-Yemeni crisis concerning the
disputed islands in the Red Sea will bring tranquility to the region and
will strengthen the relationship between the peoples of Eritrea and
Yemen. Mr. Woldensae made the statement in a televised interview last
night. The minister further noted that a peaceful solution had become
feasible because the two nations had agreed to arbitration.
Elaborating on the peace process, the minister pointed out that the
discussion focussed on which islands were in question and how to best
divide them. The court of arbitration adjudicated that all the islands
lying in the south and southwest part belonged to Eritrea and those
lying in the north and northeast go to Yemen. The next move will concern
delineation of territorial waters. Mr. Woldensae stated that the
peaceful solution to the crisis was a positive example to nations with
similar problems.
2. Yemeni Foreign Minister Mr. Abdul-qaddar Bajmal arrived in Asmara
this morning and is scheduled to hold talks with Eritrean Foreign
Minister Haile Woldensae. The talks are aimed at normalizing relations
between the two nations.
