During the night of Wednesday, a 28-year-old man from Eritrea was killed in a fire in an apartment on the grounds of the recording facility in Upper Franconia (AEO) in Bamberg. This now resulted in forensic examinations. The man himself may have been responsible for the fire, the police said on Thursday afternoon. 15 more people suffered slight smoke gas poisoning during the fire.

Early Wednesday morning the apartment had a devastating fire in an apartment on the ground floor of an accommodation building in the AEO. During firefighting, the firefighters in a burned-out room found the now identified 28-year-old resident in the building's wing.
Cause of fire is clearly established
Regarding the cause of the fire, the investigators currently assume that the fire was caused by negligent handling of smoking utensils. This was the result of the numerous interviews with interpreters, the interviews of the residents, the assessment of an expert of the Bavarian State Office of Criminal Investigation and the use of a specially trained detection dog.
The police had already ruled out an attack on Wednesday.

BR: Refugee charges the security service

But would it have even come this far? According to the Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), a resident of the accommodation in the east of Bamber raises serious allegations against security personnel in the AEO - because they alerted the fire service too late. Probably, according to the BR report, because the security staff initially assumed a false alarm. In the AEO, there are always false positives - for example, because residents smoked in their rooms.

In the night of Wednesday, however, the refugee had become suspicious, because even after 15 minutes the alarm still had not stopped. As he described the BR, he had then discovered smoke in the stairwell and reported the fire to the guard at the main gate. But this had not alarmed the fire department - only a Syrian security guard believed the refugee and dialed the emergency call.

According to the refugee, the automatic alarm had already started at around 2:30. According to Police Headquarters in Bayreuth, the rescue services were alerted shortly after 3 o'clock. In this representation, the police remain.
"We examine everything that is directly related to the investigation of the circumstances that have led to the death of the victim," said spokesman Jürgen Stadter on demand on Thursday to the allegations of the refugee. According to a report from the police, the report about the fire in the apartment equipped with smoke detectors was received by the integrated control center in Bamberg at 3 pm on Wednesday morning, Thursday afternoon. "Reliable evidence that the fire has been reported some time before, did not arise in the course of the previously conducted investigations," it says literally in the message.

The Government of Upper Franconia also confirmed the verification of the alerting process.
