Journalist attacked in London for his reporting on Eritrea

DECEMBER 4, 2018

The British freelance journalist Martin Plaut was attacked outside the British Library in London. Several people were involved in the attack, which was a vengeance for Plaut's reporting on Eritrea.

On Friday, Martin Plaut was contacted by a man who said he wanted to hand over information about Eritrea. Plaut has specialized in the Horn of Africa and has reportedly been reporting repeatedly for Eritrea over the past ten years.

They met at the British Library, but when Plaut arrived at the place and settled down at a coffee table, the man attacked and poured a liquid from a plastic container against him. The liquid consisted of milk, flour and eggs. The man screamed to Plaut that he was a "traitor" and demanded to know if he had been paid from British or American authorities for his report on Eritrea. Police were summoned and arrested the man, who is now suspected of abuse.

The event was filmed by several people who appeared to be in association with the attacker, and movies were later released online. On Saturday, Tweetade Eritrea's ambassador to Japan appreciated the attack and accused Plaut of spreading propaganda in the news form.

Plaut tells the press freedom organization Mapping Media Freedom that the tweet worries him because it can be seen as a call for new attacks.
