Peace process between Ethiopia and Eritrea should be supported

Bundestag votes in favor of support for the peace process between Ethiopia and Eritrea . For the adoption of a request by the CDU / CSU and SPD (19/4847 ) voted on Thursday, January 17, 2019 , the coalition parliamentary groups against the votes of Alliance 90 / The Greens and AfD with abstention of the FDP and the Left. The vote was a decision recommendation (19/5644 ) of the Foreign Affairs Committee. No majority found an application FDP Group (19/4837 ), which was rejected by the majority of the other political groups. Also rejected was an amendment by the Alliance 90 / Greens (19/6109). On the other hand, CDU / CSU, SPD and AfD voted for the Greens abstaining from left-wing and FDP. These resolutions also contained recommendations of the Foreign Affairs Committee (19/7082 ,19/7088 ).

Coalition: Driving political opening

In their motion, the coalition groups call on the Federal Government to help Ethiopia and Eritrea "to take further steps towards the complete normalization of their bilateral relationship as soon as possible". It also called on both governments to use the peace process to "drive political opening and economic transformation and anchor it institutionally so as to offer young people in the region perspectives on political and social participation". 

Other demands, "within the available budget", are for greater financial support for the development of the education system in Ethiopia, as well as a possible resumption of development cooperation with Eritrea "as soon as the internal and internal conditions in Eritrea are met".

FDP: Check UN sanctions against Eritrea

According to the wishes of the Liberals, the Federal Government is to promote in particular cross-border projects and measures to build economic, social and cultural exchanges as well as to put the sanctions of the United Nations Security Council against Eritrea to the test and, if necessary, to seek easing or repeal , 

Other demands in the FDP proposal include greater coherence in EU stabilization and development programs in the Horn of Africa and in eastern and southern Africa, respectively.

Green: implement Algiers Agreement of 2000

The Greens call on the Federal Government to fully and sustainably support the peace process between Ethiopia and Eritrea together with the EU and the EU Special Representative and in close cooperation with the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development for the Horn of Africa, as well as concrete support measures in particular to end the border dispute and implement the 2000 Algiers Agreement. (ahe / HAU / 01.17.2019)
