As in 2018, the Eritrean Mosana Debesay and her brother Mekseb Debesay were respectively crowned champion and African champion of road cycling, this March 19, 2019 in Baher Dar in Ethiopia. On the men's side, Algerian Azzedine Lagab, 2nd in the online race, is also qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games.
Africa has its top three representatives for the road cycling events of the 2020 Olympic Games.
On the women's side, Mosana Debesay clinched her ticket to Tokyo with her victory at the 2019 African Championships (March 15-20). Eritrea beat Ethiopian Eyeru Tesfoam Gebru (2nd) and South Africa's Joana van de Winkel (3rd) on March 19th in Ethiopia in the online race.
In men, it was Mekseb Debesay who won this event, ahead of two Algerians, Azzedine Lagab and Youcef Reguigui. Lagab, 2nd, will therefore accompany Eritrea to the 2020 Olympics.
The Debesay are not on their first shot at the continental championships. Multi-medal winners, they had
both won the 2018 edition . But it was during the individual time-trials.
