Participants reported earlier today, Friday, 14 April, from the #Eritrea'n youth 13th YPFDJ conference venue in Veldhoven, the #Netherlands. The conference is off to a good start despite minor attempts at disruption yesterday 13 April from anti-democracy hirelings of the Ethiopian regime, they said.
Earlier in the week, a few Soros-funded Dutch regime-change activists and self-proclaimed "Eritrea experts" had been busy fanning hostile anti-Eritrea campaign in the media. At the height of the disruption attempt, the same propaganda activists had disseminated false information in the Dutch corporate media claiming that the conference had been canceled.
After the disrupters turned violent in the morning hours, Dutch police had to intervene reluctantly to restore order, and hauled two bus loads full of the hooligans to prison.
Over 500 Eritrean youth representatives of YPFDJ chapters from all over Europe, Africa, Middle East and North America are participating in the conference. Also, a number of friends of Eritrea, including progressive Ethiopians, will be delivering solidarity messages and reports. The conference is expected to continue in full gear today, Friday 14 April.
"The Netherlands is a European country that prides itself on its liberal democratic tradition," one of the conference participants said. "It's simply unheard of to cancel a conference that had been planned and legally approved a year in advance." The Eritrean young woman from Sweden, 21, added that freedom of assembly cannot be banned arbitrarily by fiat in many European countries, including Holland.
Eritrea, one of the few truly independent progressive countries in Africa, charts an independent political and socio-economic path, rejecting the neoliberal orthodoxy known as the Washington Consensus. For this, it is constantly harassed by Western imperialist powers and their client states in the Horn of Africa, mainly Ethiopia.
In 1998-2000 Ethiopia launched a "border war" on Eritrea with the blessing and financing of the US and allied European countries. Despite the contested border areas being awarded to Eritrea by an arbitration court based at The Hague on 13 April, 2002, Ethiopia refuses to accept the "final and binding" court ruling and continues to occupies sovereign Eritrean territories. Such violation is normally considered aggression and against international law.
In 2009, the US engineered a sanctions regime to be imposed on Eritrea by the UN Security Council on trumped up charges and fabricated intelligence.
Analysts say that the US-imposed sanctions on Eritrea were designed to deflect focus and pressure away from Ethiopia's flagrant violation of international law with its occupation of Eritrean territories. In the past two years the Ethiopian dictatorial regime has been facing severe economic and political crisis due to growing domestic pressure from widespread poplar uprising.
