DUBROVNIK. An Eritrean migrant who arrived yesterday in Pozzallo died on the ship of the Spanish non-governmental organization Proactiva Open Arms. As soon as he landed, the young man, 22, was immediately transferred to the Maggiore hospital in Modica, but there was nothing to do.

"The boy was assisted after the rescue - says Carmelo Scarso, a doctor from the ASP of Ragusa - but who knows how long he did not eat. It had an advanced organic deterioration, it was skeletal. We have seen so many migrants arriving tested, but this exceeded all limits ". The diagnosis was: cachexia, in other words he died of hunger.

"A huge penalty - says the mayor of Pozzallo, Roberto Ammatuna - Yesterday we witnessed a tragic landing, we saw an impressive situation of malnutrition not only in the boy who unfortunately did not make it, but also in his traveling companions. They were all skin and bones, they seemed to have come out of the Nazi concentration camps. Desperate people, malnourished: it was terrible. Fifty-eight of the migrants who arrived had cases of scabies and are already under treatment, but what really left them open-mouthed were their physical conditions: skeletons, men, women and children without a thread of fat, just a bunch of bones ".
