The National Council tacitly transmitted a motion to the Government on Thursday to strengthen the diplomatic presence in Eritrea, without opening a Swiss embassy in Asmara. However, the decision will allow to intensify the dialogue with the local authorities.

The People's Chamber had approved the opening of an Eritrean office in June, but the States had modified the text and opted for an alternative solution that would allow the costs to be contained and continue to provide services through the embassy in Khartoum, in Sudan.

The unstable political situation of the African country, without a parliament and under the total government of the president, drives many young people to flee and seek refuge in nations like Switzerland. Asylum applications in 2011 had exploded but their number has declined sharply since 2015.
