The 28-year-old Mebrahutu Melake (called Mebrie by friends) had no family in Zaltbommel. The other victim, the 33-year-old Gerry Gilay Kedane, leaves behind a wife and three children. Tuesday morning there was a farewell service for the two in Pand 9. At 10.45 am the bells of the Sint-Maartenskerk were ringing for this. In the afternoon there was also a meeting where mayor Peter Rehwinkel attended.

Collection action

The costs for the repatriation and funeral in Eritrea are partly paid by the municipality of Zaltbommel. The company Ravas, the employer of Melake, also contributes. And cycle De Spullewaard, where Kedane worked, started a collection campaign. The shop has a memorial corner, where people can leave a message but also a financial contribution.

Melake and Kedane got their water car on Thursday evening at the ferry in Brakel. They could no longer be saved.

Loaded

A salvage company drove the car out of the water and carried it away for police investigation.
