WINTERSWIJK - The drowning person who is currently looking for emergency services in the Hilgelo recreation lake in Winterswijk, is a 19-year-old man from Eritrea. That confirms a police spokesman on the spot.
It concerns a resident of the asylum seekers' center in Winterswijk. He would have jumped into the water yesterday afternoon from a raft and has been missing since then.
Emergency services looked for the man last night until late in the evening. The large-scale search continues since this morning at 10 am. The area is scanned with sonar equipment.
The fire department could search for a depth of about 15 meters yesterday. The lake is a lot deeper, about 30 to 40 meters. A diving team can reach that depth today.
A strong undercurrent can occur in the lake due to a nearby sand suction installation. Today, however, the police announced that the installation was not on.
The man from Eritrea had gone swimming with a group of about 30 asylum seekers. Agents have spoken to a number of asylum seekers as a result of the incident, but that turned out to be difficult. Many witnesses were very emotional. Today, the police are therefore once again in conversation with the other asylum seekers.
