The Re-establishment of the Diplomatic Relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea and the Signing of the “Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship”

1. On July 8 (Ethiopean / Eritrean Time), Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Mr. Isaias Afwerki, President of the State of Eritrea, jointly announced the re-establishment of the diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea and signed the “Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship” on the occasion of Prime Minister Abiy’s visit in Asmara, capital of Eritrea. The Government of Japan welcomes this development.

2. The Government of Japan expects that the relationship between the two countries will progress further and that the two countries will contribute to the greater stability and prosperity of the Horn of Africa region, following this announcement.
