The president of Eritrea, Isaias Afewerki, arrived in Ethiopia today for a historic visit to consolidate the peace process between the two nations after two decades of conflict, official sources reported.

The Eritrean president landed at the Bole international airport early in the morning and was greeted by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, said the head of the latter's Cabinet, Fitsum Arega.

"President Afewerki arrives at his other home, Addis Ababa, upon receiving a heartfelt and warm welcome from his brother Abiy Ahmed, from public representatives, artists, public figures and members of the Government Welcome to President Isaias," Fitsum wrote in your Twitter social network account.

Ministers and other representatives of the country also traveled with the President of Eritrea.

The trip, which lasts for three days, returns the visit made by Abiy last week to the capital of Eritrea, Asmara.

That was the first meeting between leaders of the two countries in two decades, a time in which the relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea have been marked first by the war and then, by the tension, due to border disputes.

Isaias and Abiy agreed that "both countries will work to promote close cooperation in the political, economic, social, cultural and security areas," said Eritrean Information Minister Yemane G. Meskel at the time.

It is expected that both presidents will preside tomorrow the reopening of the Embassy of Eritrea in Ethiopia.

The reestablishment of the diplomatic headquarters in both countries was one of the highlights of the agreement reached last Sunday that ended the "state of war" between both nations.

The pact also bore fruit the restoration of telephone connections and direct airlines between the two nations.

Eritrea became independent from Ethiopia in 1993, but border disputes led the two countries to a war between 1998 and 2000 that caused tens of thousands of deaths on both sides, and ended the Algiers Agreement signed on December 12, 2000. .

However, when this commission decided to grant Eritrea the city of Badme, the epicenter of the war, Ethiopia retracted its commitment and the then Ethiopian Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi, said he would only accept that opinion "in principle".

Since then and until the arrival of Abiy to the post last April, the relations between these two East African countries have been tense, although the new Ethiopian leader has opted for the openness and the rapprochement of both nations.
