The first stage of the Tour de l'Espoir was won by the selection of Eritrea. The stage race in Cameroon started with a team time trial. The Tour de l'Espoir is the first competition of the UCI Nations Cup U23, a series of international competitions for league riders.
Eritrea completed the 18.6 kilometer course around Douala in 23 minutes and 58 seconds, giving Yacob Debesay the first leader's jersey. The second place was for the selection of Algeria, 14 seconds behind. Portugal was third on 25 counts.
The Tour de l'Espoir will last until Saturday. At the start there are two Dutch people on behalf of the selection of Monaco: Ben Gerrits and Marc Mehagnoul. There are no Belgians.
