As the week began, Iran launched a barrage of missiles towards Israel, hours after the Israelis struck a Hezbollah target in Beirut. After several rounds of retaliatory attacks, and a public call by Donald Trump for restraint, both sides announced they would halt hostilities.
For Andy Gawthorpe of Leiden University, this episode was an attempt by Iran to establish a new regional order in which it dictates to Israel and the US what they may and may not do. One feature of this new order, he cautions, is that it makes peace impossible to imagine.
“Netanyahu cannot accept an Iranian veto over Israel’s actions in Lebanon. Trump cannot get his peace deal with Iran while Israel is bombing Lebanon. And Iran has the incentive to keep pushing for more, inflicting more costs on its opponents, because in the new regional order it can do so without many consequences.”
