To report it, data in hand, is the special envoy of the UN High Commission: it had never happened and is the direct consequence of the agreements made by the previous Italian government and confirmed with the current. The same Unhcr disseminates the new data on the number of refugees for each European country: the Italian figure is among the lowest on the continent

An unheard of overtaking. And worrying . For the first time in the history of forced migrations of these years through the Mediterranean Sea, in 2018 the number of migrants rejected in Libya by Libyan coast guards exceeds that of arrivals in Italy.

It is Vincent Cochetel, special envoy for the UNHCR (High Commissioner for Refugees), to give news of his official twitter profile: from 1 January to 30 September 2018, against "14,500 people intercepted by the Libyan units of Guardia coast, the arrivals from Libya to Italy are 12.543 " . A radical change compared to just over a year ago, the result of the policy of agreements with Tripolitania, the part of Libya ruled by Al Serraj, promoted first by the former Interior Minister Marco Minniti and now by his successor Matteo Salvini . Politics strongly questioned by UNHCR itself and by numerous humanitarian agencies for the concrete risk of violence and abuses against migrants once they returned from where they left, or from that unstable land and in the grip of ongoing armed conflicts that today is Libya .

The same Unhcr, in addition to calculating this important turnaround in the binomial increase of rejections / decrease of arrivals ( to this link the daily database of Unchr ) has recently updated the table on the presence of refugees in each European country . Here she is.

As can be seen at first glance, it is confirmed that Italy is one of the countries that least welcomes refugees compared to the total population: 2.8 per thousand inhabitants, or 0.28 percent. If compared to the relationship of other nations, the gap between perception and reality becomes dramatic in our country , given that for many Italians and even for leading politicians "Italy is a great refugee camp" and the word "invasion" recurs often in discussions. Data in hand, so completely misleading and excessive, if not embarrassing. The problem lies in how to make it known to those who are convinced otherwise and will not be reached by this information. To return to the data and conclude with some comparisons: Switzerland, Norway, Cyprus and Germany welcome just over 11 refugees per thousand inhabitants (1.1%), or almost four times that of Italy. Austria is at 13 in 1000, or 1.3%, while Malta - often attacked by the Italian government for its non-interventionism in the central Mediterranean - has almost 17 refugees per thousand inhabitants (1.68%) six times as much as 'Italy. Six times. At the top Sweden is close to 24 per thousand (2.38%), whose avant-garde model is now having economic problems related to the strong increase in reception in recent years, especially after the start of the war in Syria. Under the share of Italy, however, only Bulgaria (0.27%, almost in line with the Italian figure), the United Kingdom (0.18% or less than two in a thousand) and, at the bottom, Spain and Portugal, with refugee reception almost nothing : 4 every 10 thousand inhabitants for Spain, even 2 every 10 thousand for Portugal.
