Yet more astonishing scenes in the UK this week, where the Supreme Court has ruled that prime minister Boris Johnson acted illegally when he suspended – or prorogued – parliament for five weeks. Many are calling for Johnson to resign for misleading the Queen and for trying to undermine democracy. But, explains Matthew Flinders, Johnson has built his brand on the idea that he is defending ‘the people’ against an elite trying to crush the Brexit dream. And with that in mind, it’s even possible he could turn this nightmare situation into a triumph.
