Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi discussed on Thursday the latest developments in bilateral relations with a Sudanese delegation led by Sudan’s ruling Sovereign Council member Shamseldin Kabashi, the Egyptian presidency announced.

El-Sisi and the delegation discussed the latest developments concerning the mounting tensions between Ethiopia and Sudan over the disputed eastern border region of Al-Fashqa.

Ethiopia and Sudan have been exchanging accusations over ownership rights to the agricultural area.

Sudan accused Ethiopia on Wednesday of a “dangerous and unjustified escalation” after an Ethiopian military aircraft crossed the disputed border area.

The Egyptian president also discussed the latest regional developments including the situation in the Horn of Africa and Nile Basin regions.

The Egyptian president and the delegation also discussed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the necessity of coordinating efforts and stances to achieve the interests of both countries.

Sudan pulled out of the latest round of meetings after requesting a larger role for African Union experts.

A high-level delegation from the United Arab Emirates concluded a one-day visit to Khartoum on Wednesday in an attempt to break the deadlock over the GERD.

During the meeting with the Sudanese delegation, President El-Sisi said that Egypt is looking forward to continuing cooperation and coordination with Sudan in various areas, given the long-standing ties and common interests between the two countries.

Kabashi highlighted the distinguished and historical relations binding between Cairo and Khartoum, hailing Egypt's sustained support for Sudan during the current transitional period.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel attended the meeting.

Kabashi is on a visit to Cairo leading a high-profile delegation that includes Sudanese Information and Culture Minister Faisal Mohamed Saleh, Director of the Sudanese General Intelligence Service Lieutenant General Jamal Abdel-Majeed and Secretary-General of the Transitional Sovereignty Council Mohamed Al-Ghali.
