Five migrant bodies recovered from Libya's coast

Thu Jan 5, 2017 3:26pm GMT

TRIPOLI Jan 5 (Reuters) - The bodies of five migrants that washed up on the shores of Tripoli after their boat capsized in the Mediterranean have been removed in body bags by an aid agency.

The five people were among a group of around 80 that were travelling in the boat on Wednesday when it capsized, the Libyan Red Crescent agency said.

The survivors, many of whom were from Senegal and Bangladesh, were sent to shelters across the city.

Last year, a record 5,000 migrants are believed to have drowned in the Mediterranean, the most dangerous border crossing on the planet for migrants, the International Organization for Migration and the U.N. refugee agency (UNHCR) said.

The high death toll was blamed on bad weather, the declining quality of vessels used by smugglers and their tactics to avoid detection, a UNHCR spokesman said last month. (Writing by Patrick Johnston in London; Editing by Dominic Evans)
