Asmara, 12 November 2008 - President Isaias Afwerki, who left for Sudan in the morning hours today on a two-day working visit at the invitation of the Government of Sudan, participated in the closing session of the “Conference of the Sudanese People’s Initiative towards Peaceful Resolution of the Darfur Issue.”
In a speech he delivered at the conference, the President congratulated President Omar Hassan Al-Beshir, the entire Sudanese people and all the parties that made due contribution to the success of the conference. He pointed out that despite the fact that the initiative of the Sudanese people towards peaceful resolution of the Darfur issue was rather late, it constitutes a victory for the Sudanese people which is taking place at a significant juncture.
President Isaias went on to indicate that the conference is the first of its kind aimed at resolving Sudanese issues with the participation of all Sudanese nationals without external interference. In this regard, he expressed conviction that it would pave the way for the Sudanese people to tackle all internal challenges themselves step by step.
Expressing optimism that the conference would bring about lasting and comprehensive political solution as well as promote peace and prosperity in the Sudan, the President called on all friendly quarters to support the Sudanese people’s initiative. To this end, he asserted that the people and Government of Eritrea would stand alongside the brotherly people of Sudan.
In the course of the visit, President Isaias would hold talks with President Omar Hassan Al-Beshir and other Sudanese government officials on bilateral relations and issues of mutual concern to both countries, as well as the efforts being made to promote peace in the Sudan.
On arrival at Khartoum International Airport, the President was accorded warm welcome by the Sudanese leader, ministers, a number of Sudanese officials and member of the diplomatic corps. The welcoming ceremony also included marching parade and salute of guard of honor.
