OEA Statement on New Effort to Tar Eritrea
The Organization of Eritrean Americans (OEA) is dismayed to find out that the US Department of State, especially its Bureau of African Affairs headed by Jendayi E. Frazer, assistant secretary of state for African affairs, is still pursuing its ill-advised agenda to place Eritrea on the list of countries that sponsor terrorism.
The US Department of State's initial efforts to "collect evidences" against Eritrea, to show any ties to terrorism, all failed as it could not substantiate its allegations. The fabricated UN Monitoring Group's Report on Somalia was rejected and discredited because there was no evidence to show Eritrea was aiding terrorists in any way. Eritrea has been fighting terrorism long before September 11 and this attempt by the US Department of State is an effort to punish Eritrea for its principled stand on Somalia.
OEA has been working to build US-Eritrea relations and welcomes the opportunity to work with the new Administration to repair relations between the two nations soured by the outgoing Administration and its failed policies for the Horn of Africa that are threatening to destabilize the entire region.
OEA calls on the incoming Obama Administration to stop the US Department of State from committing yet another strategic mistake in the Horn of Africa, which will inevitably irreversibly alter US-Eritrea relations and jeopardize US reputation and credibility in the Horn. Such an action can only undermine any effort to bring about peace to this war-ravaged sub-region of Africa.
