O.N.L.F Statement: Crackdown on Ethnic Somalis In Ogaden & Addis Ababa
27 December 2008
Following the massacre of Ogaden civilians in the village of Mooyaha
near the town of Ararso 50 Km north west of Dhagahbur, Ogaden, on the
17th of December 2008, the Ethiopian regime has launched a major
military operation, consisting of both ground and airborne troops
estimated to be about three brigades in the regions of Jigjiga, Nogob,
and West of Dhagahbur . These troops have killed civilians, confiscated
and slaughtered livestock belonging to local villagers and arbitrarily
arrested several pastoralists.
In reaction to this rampage the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF)
launched a military counter operation in the above mentioned regions.
Fighting has been going on for the last three days. Battlefield details
will be released soon in a military communique.
In addition to the Ethiopian regimes war crimes in Ogaden, it has also
targeted both ethnic Somalis from Ogaden and Somalis from Somalia in
Addis Ababa, arresting hundreds over the past few days without cause.
These actions demonstrate to the world that the Ethiopian regime is
pursuing a policy of ethnic cleansing, extrajudicial killings, and
arbitrary arrests of Somalis in all areas where it is able to exercise
its authority. As such, the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF)
reiterates our call for the United Nations to follow through with the
recommendations of its humanitarian assessment team, which visited
Ogaden in September of 2007 calling for an "independent investigation"
into gross violations of human rights targeting the people of Ogaden.
When crimes against humanity and genocide are taking place, it is not
sufficient for the United Nations to sit by idly waiting for an
invitation from the regime perpetrating those war crimes. The world body
must act as the current Ethiopian regime will continue to kill innocent
civilians unless there is international intervention.
