"A nation's culture resides in the hearts & in the soul of its
people." -Mahatma Ghandi

Even 28 degree weather couldn't hold back the Dallas Eritreans from
attending The Elegant Eritrean Affair hosted by the newly
organizedYPFDJ- Dallaschapter. The members are excited to announce
that their very first Holiday fundraiser guayla was a success! This
was the largest Eritrean youth organized fundraising guayla put on in
the city of Dallas in a very long time. Many people were not only
anxious to see the talented Sami Berhane and guest singer Saba
Mekonnen perform, but also wanted to show support to the new
chapter's initiative. It was a successful event with Eritrean
families from all over the DFW metroplex coming out to join in on the
festivities. Fenan Russom, the chairperson of YPDFJ- Dallas gave a
welcoming speech introducing the chapter's members and future
ambitions, before introducing the performers and thanking them for
the donation of their talent and time to the event. The chapter
members started off the guayla dancing to Wedi Tikabo's "Men Alo" and
everybody else followed suit when Sami Berhane took the stage withhis
band members, Alex Kiflom & Menghis Tesfageber. The guests warmed up
dancing to "Kokob Awald" and Saba Mekonnen's guest appearance was
well-received when she sang a fantastic rendition of Tsehaytu
Beraki's "Mdjmrya."
The chapter cannot take any credit for the success of their first
Holiday Guayla without acknowledging the real creators of the night,
the Eritrean community that came out to enjoy themselves, purchased
fundraiser raffle tickets, and the women that donated food for the
dinner. During the night, the winner of the holiday fundraising
raffle was announced and awarded with $300, which she expressed was
exactly what she needed right before the holidays. The children's
room, filled with many funactivities, was also agreat treat for both
the parents and their kids, keeping thechildrendelightfully
entertained while everyonecontinued dancing the night away tosongs
like "A'tigidefene" and more. The chapter was elatedto see everybody
enjoying themselves andthe event's success shed an optimistic light
for the chapter's future activities that will start in the new year,
like the mentor program and much more.
YPFDJ- Dallas would like to thank the Eritrean Community members of
the DFW area for their unconditional support and words of
encouragement. The combination of outstanding musicians, delectable
dishes of traditional food, andexcellent companymade it apparent that
it was going to be an affair to remember!
