Debretsion-TigrayJune 13, 2019 (Ezega.com) -- The Tigrayan people have been under constant attack since Abiy Ahmed was elected Prime Minister more than a year ago, says Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael, the Deputy Chief Administrator of Tigray.

In an interview he gave to the Ethiopian Reporter, Debrestion said “the people of Tigray have developed secessionist sentiment due to deliberate ethnic attack targeting Tigray.”

The interview follows Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's visit to Axum in Tigray earlier this week, one of only two times the Prime Minister ventured to Tigray in more than a year in office.

In the interview, Dr. Debretsion all but condemned effort by central authorities to undermine Tigray. He said an attempt was made to intimidate his state by federal police. He also said the central authorities and the Amhara regional government turned a blind eye when attempts were made to blockade and starve his people.

He called these deeds senseless and shameful. The deliberate attack on our people is pushing the people of Tigray to lose confidence in the federal or kilil system, he remarked.

He also said a lot of Tigrayans were cleansed from various government positions in the Federal government, not because of their capacity, but their identity.

Speaking of former intelligence chief Getachew Assefa and his arrest warrant, he said he disagrees targetting certain individuals for arrest, while ignoring others. He called the allegations against Getachew Assefa shameful. Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegne should be questioned first before Getachew Assefa is questioned, he said.

The Tigrayan regional government has been increasing detaching itself from federal affairs for some time now. It is unknown to what end this is happening and whether the people of Tigray are behind it, as the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) claims.

Tigray-based opposition parties, such as Arena Tigray, say the TPLF, for which Debretsion is the leader, is creating this false narrative to preserve itself by creating fear among the public. In return, the TPLF is calling these Tigray-based opposition parties traitors and mercenaries.

A great many Ethiopians blame the TPLF for the poor state of affairs in Ethiopia today. Many bitterly complain about the ethnic divisions and tensions created by nearly three decaded of ethnic federalism and ethnic-based coalition of political parties who are accountable to no one but themselves.

To these people, TPLF's latest move is nothing but yet another failure to stand up for Ethiopian unity, stability and identity in its hour of need.
