Toronto, June 20th 2017 - Eritrean Community Members in the City of Toronto and Its Environs commemorated martyrs day with patriotic zeal.

Toronto, June 20th 2017 - Eritrean Community Members in the City of Toronto and Its Environs commemorated martyrs day at Etienne Brule Park in the City of Toronto. This year's turnout was a record with hundreds of Eritreans gathered together to honor their  martyrs in a commemoration organised  by ENHOC.

Present at the remembrance were Eritrea’s Consul General to Canada, the consulate staff, religious leaders  and Eritrean community members.

This year also saw an impressive turnout of newly arrived Eritreans.

The tribute began with a moment of silence in memory of all those who sacrificed their lives for Eritrea's Freedom and Sovereignty. The program included walking around the park to commemorate the long struggle,lead by the younger Eritreans, it featured  speeches, poetry and songs.

Eritrea's Consul General to Canada Mr. Teumezghi Tesfa, officially opened the ceremony. In his keynote speech to Eritrean Community members, he reiterated the day of remembrance  of its fallen martyrs who made the ultimate  sacrifice to liberate the country from the cuffs of oppression and all those who have fallen safeguarding the hard won independence from the continued threats of Eritrea's  enemies. Hence,  it was the responsibility of each and every Eritrean to support the families of those that were martyred.He also stated that the prevailing peace and stability in the country is the outcome of the heavy sacrifices paid.

This year also featured the most participation of the youth through poems, collection of donations and leading of the walk on the park.

Further, around 30 community members participated in the martyrs walk to represent Eritrea’s 6 zones by walking for 15 kilometers starting from Christie station to Kipling Station  on June, 17 2017.

Furthermore, the Community members expressed readiness to step up efforts towards bestowing the national values to the young generation, while encouraging them to support families of fallen heroes. Eritrean nationals that resides in the city of Toronto and environs concluded the martyr’s commemoration by reiterating the readiness to honor the trust fund of our fallen heroes and to depict the true image of their homeland.

In another news, In the City of Winnipeg, Calgary and Ottawa also held a martyrs day commemoration with great honor.
