Rome, July 3, 2017 (Askanews) - Eritrea does not want "the money of Italy, does not want assistance, not help", but "Italian investments", because "we have always been the way of entry for Italy in the Horn of Africa and we We believe there are plenty of opportunities for Italian companies not only to work in the Eritrean market, but also to settle in Eritrea and then expand into the Horn of Africa and the Gulf Countries. " This is what Askanews Yemane Gebreab, adviser to the Eritrean President, told during a visit to Rome.

In 2014, former Foreign Minister of Italy Lapo Pistelli had been visiting Asmara for "to initiate a path of cooperation on all sectors of mutual interest" in the face of the massive arrival of Eritrean migrants on the Italian coast. But according to the Eritrean authorities, once Pistels came out, "everything has stopped". Last October, Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh Mohammed had told askanews: "We are working with the EU, with Germany and other European countries, but not with Italy ... Italy does not want to cooperate with the EU, Eritrea and we do not know why. "

To curb the escape of its young people from the country, the Eritrean government has focused on creating employment, calling for Europe's support. In January 2016, the European Union announced EUR 200 million in aid to Eritrea in the fight against poverty and socio-economic development in the country through the 11th European Development Fund (FES) for the 2014-2020 period . In September 2016, the Eritrean authorities signed a cooperation protocol with Germany aimed at creating employment opportunities for young people through vocational training; And in December 2016, through the Africa Fund created in Malta in 2015, the EU has allocated € 13 million, to which Berlin has added another three, for a project to support the development of small and medium-sized enterprises through Training dedicated to young people. If more than 36,000 Eritrean migrants arrived in the Italian coast in 2015, from the beginning of 2017 to 30 June, the Italian Interior Ministry registered 2,690 Eritreans. "Eritrean arrival numbers are dropping drastically due to changes in the country," said Yemane, "but for us, that we are a small country, any number of Eritreans want to leave the country is too big, It's about small numbers. " If the numbers have dropped, he added, because "we are offering young training courses, the job situation is improving, the economy is growing, and young people are also aware of the situation in Europe. They first thought that life in Europe was easy, that they would be successful, but now they know that life in Europe is difficult, spending months and months in reception centers."

"We want to promote Italian investments in Eritrea, we want Italian entrepreneurs to work in Eritrea, we want Italians to visit Eritrea in larger numbers, we want Italian professionals to come to Eritrea - said Yemane - we are not interested For the money of Italy, we do not want assistance, or aid. What we want is to develop a partnership that will return Italy in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf massively. And the natural entrance point for Italy is Eritrea. That's what we are trying to promote in terms of ideas, thinking. And we do not want to talk only with government, but also with Italian society, with the business world, with the academic world. "

Yemane recalled the "very close relations between Italy and Eritrea, historical, cultural and technological relations", underlining that the country of the Horn of Africa, the Italian colony until the Second World War, wants to "build relations between the two peoples, The respective university worlds, to develop all forms of cooperation with Italy. " But according to Eritrean president's advisor, "in Italy there is still no awareness of how Eritrea can be important to Italy. And as long as there is no such awareness I do not think it will change something "in the relations between the two countries.

Roma, 3 lug.
